@FGCU_WTEN Claims Two Championships During Day Two at FGCU Invite

FORT MYERS, Fla. – After playing through constant winds all morning and afternoon, the FGCU women's tennis team capped off day two at the FGCU Invite with a pair of singles titles as Joselyn Treyes Albarracin defeated teammate Julia Ascúa in the 'B' draw championship and Julianna Curtis downed Jaide Collins of St. John's in the 'C' draw finals.

"Today was a really good day of competition for the ladies," said FGCU head coach Courtney Vernon. "We faced a lot of adversity with the wind and hopefully learned from those challenges. We won two of the three flights in singles play and made some good steps today. We're looking forward to playing again tomorrow."

After going 2-0 during the opening day of spring competition on Saturday, both Ascúa (Santa Fe, Argentina/Domingo G. Silva) and Treyes Albarracin (Guayaquil, Ecuador/InterAmerican Academy) won their semifinal matches in straight sets. The Ecuador native defeated St. John's Zofia Stanisz 6-1, 6-1, while fellow freshman Ascúa downed Tjasa Jerse of Southern Miss 6-1, 6-4 to set up the all-FGCU final match. Treyes Albarracin got the best of her teammate in the finals as she defeated Ascúa 6-2, 6-1 to claim the singles title.

Curtis (Tampa, Fla./Allendale Academy), who entered the 'C' draw championship after also going 2-0 in singles play on Saturday, defeated Collins in the final match and claimed her singles title after posting identical sets of 6-2, 6-2.

In 'A' draw singles play, both Elizabeth Means (Washington, D.C./Wiregrass Ranch HS) and Breana Stampfli (Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago/St. Joseph's Convent) dropped hard-fought matches. Means forced a tiebreak in her first set against Carolin Drescher of Southern Miss but ultimately lost 7-6, 6-4, while Stampfli fell in three sets to Arkansas State's Julie Gauguery, 6-3, 6-7, 10-5.

Doubles competition took place in the afternoon as Stampfli paired with Laura Falceto Font (Zaragoza, Spain/El Pilar Maristas Zaragoza) and advanced to Monday's 'B' draw finals. The duo were knotted in a 1-1 match with Southern Miss' Jerse and Elena Roca before the Golden Eagle duo retired due to an injury and paved the way for the Green and Blue tandem to make a championship appearance. Additionally, the FGCU teams of Curtis/Treyes Albarracin and Ascúa/Means dropped their doubles matches to duos from St. John's.
