FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU softball team (20-23, 3-9 Atlantic Sun) fell to USF (32-12, 3-4 American Athletic) by a 6-0 score on Wednesday night at the FGCU Softball Complex.
Freshman
Emily Demurias (Miami, Fla./Killian HS) went 1-for-1 while freshman
Natalie Lopez (Miami, Fla./Westminster Christian HS) added an infield single.
"It's been a pretty consistent story the entire season," said head coach
David Deiros. "We had opportunities to shut them down and make sure that they only scored one run, and we could not execute. We couldn't execute plays and that's really what cost us. Case in point, we are in the top of the seventh and they didn't get a ball out of the infield and scored two runs. We have to make sure that we do a better job executing what we need to be doing. Same thing on offense, we didn't score again. We had opportunities to put runs on the board, but we didn't come up with big hits and didn't execute what we needed to. We need to make sure that we use that as a building block for what we do this weekend."
Senior
Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Sante Fe HS) took the circle for the Green and Blue and pitched five innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs
. Junior Ashley Dobson (Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee Valley HS) entered the game to start the sixth inning and finished the contest for the Eagles. Dobson allowed two hits, two runs, walked one and struck out one.
The Eagles best chance to put a run on the board came in the second inning. Junior
Alexis Ross (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida S. Baker HS) led off with a single to center, and advanced to second on a groundout. Then, with two outs, sophomore
Jeanie Verderese (Jacksonville, Fla./Creekside HS) singled to center and Ross attempted to score, but was thrown out at home by the centerfielder.
USF scored its first run in the second inning off of a solo homerun to straightaway center. The Bulls scored their six runs on nine hits and an error.
The Eagles will host Jacksonville this Saturday, Apr. 11 and Sunday, Apr. 12 for a trio of contest. The doubleheader on Saturday is slated for 2 p.m. before the series finale on Sunday at 2 p.m. Prior to the start of Sunday's game, FGCU will honor its seniors.
