FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU softball team (23-29, 5-14 A-Sun) dropped both games in its doubleheader against Lipscomb (28-23, 13-6 A-Sun) on Thursday night at the FGCU Softball Complex. The Eagles dropped game one by an 8-0 score before falling by a 9-3 count in the second game.
In game one, senior
Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) went 2-for-3 with two singles while sophomore
Jeanie Verderese (Jacksonville, Fla./Creekside HS) added a double.
In game two, Verderese went 2-for-4 with an RBI single while junior
Alexis Ross (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida S. Baker HS) added two hits with one being an RBI triple.
"We did some good things today but not enough to win against a good team," said head coach
David Deiros.
GAME ONESenior
Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Sante Fe HS) took the circle in game one for the Eagles. The senior pitched six innings, allowing six runs, one earned, five hits and two walks. Sophomore
Taylor Wade (Pace, Fla./Pace HS) pitched the final inning for the Green and Blue and allowed two hits, two runs, one earned and walked two.
Offensively, the Eagles could not muster a run and had a total of four hits.
Lipscomb struck first in the game, scoring six runs in the sixth inning. The Bisons scored their eight runs on seven hits and four errors.
GAME TWOJunior
Ashley Dobson (Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee Valley HS) started game two for the Green and Blue. The junior pitched two innings, allowing four runs, one earned, two hits and walked one. Freshman
Gabbee Draney (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep HS) entered the game in the third and pitched three innings. The freshman allowed two hits, two earned runs, walked one and struck out one. Wade made her second relief appearance of the night when she enter the game in the sixth. The sophomore allowed four hits, three earned runs, walked one and struck out two.
Freshman
Brittany McGuire (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra HS) led off the sixth inning with an infield hit. Ross stepped to the plate and tripled down the right-field line, scoring McGuire on the play. Freshman
Michaela Hynes (Windermere, Fla./West Orange HS) then singled through the right side to score Ross for the final run of the inning.
With one out in the seventh, Carpenter doubled to center. McGuire reached via a walk before Ross singled to center to load the bases. With two outs, Verderese hit an RBI single into right, scoring Carpenter for the final run of the game.
Lipscomb scored a run in every inning but the third. The Bisons nine runs came on eight hits and two errors.

FGCU finished their season with an RPI ranking in the top-100 for the 3rd consecutive season and the 5th time in their seven years at Division I. Deiros is a former head coach at the 1998 Florida State Runner-up Lely High School in Naples and is the founding head coach of the 1999 District Champion/2001 Regional Runner-up Gulf Coast High School in Naples.
