DeLAND, Fla. – The FGCU softball team (20-18, 3-5 Atlantic Sun) dropped both games in its doubleheader against Stetson (21-7, 4-1 Atlantic Sun) on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles lost both games by an 8-1 count.
In game one, senior
Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) went 3-for-3 with one of her hits being a homerun to left center. In game two, Carpenter went 2-for-4 and hit her second solo shot of the day to left field.
"We keep giving up one big inning and haven't been able to recover," said head coach
David Deiros. "We need to put it behind us and play tougher tomorrow."
GAME ONEJunior
Ashley Dobson (Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee Valley HS) started game one against Stetson. Dobson pitched five innings, allowing seven hits, eight runs, six earned while walking three and striking out five. Freshman
Gabbee Draney (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep HS) worked an inning of relief and allowed one walk.
The Hatters scored two runs in the first inning to take an early lead before scoring their final six runs in the fifth inning. Stetson's eight runs came off of seven hits and three errors.
The Eagles lone run of the game came in the second inning when Carpenter sent the ball over the wall in left center.
GAME TWOSenior
Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Sante Fe HS) took the circle in the second game of the day against the Hatters. The senior gave up five earned runs and walked five batters before Draney made her second relief appearance of the day. The freshman pitched three innings, allowing three runs and five hits while walking four. Sophomore
Taylor Wade (Pace, Fla./Pace HS) entered the game in the fourth inning and pitched three innings while walking five batters.
Stetson scored seven runs in the first inning off of two hits and an error. The Hatters tacked on their final run in the third inning and had a total of five hits in the game.
Once again Carpenter supplied the only offense for the Eagles, hitting a solo shot to left in the first inning.
The Eagles will return to action for the final game of the series against Stetson on Sunday, Mar. 15 with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.

FGCU finished their season with an RPI ranking in the top-100 for the 3rd consecutive season and the 5th time in their seven years at Division I. Deiros is a former head coach at the 1998 Florida State Runner-up Lely High School in Naples and is the founding head coach of the 1999 District Champion/2001 Regional Runner-up Gulf Coast High School in Naples.
