FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU doubles team of
Julia Ascúa and
Julianna Curtis made program history as they won the Eagles' first tournament championship, while
Laura Falceto Font advanced to Sunday's semifinal round on Saturday afternoon at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
"Today was another really good day for the ladies," said FGCU head coach
Courtney Vernon. "Winning the Bedford Cup in the doubles 'B' draw was a huge accomplishment and a program first. We also beat a duo from Miami, who is a top-10 team in the nation, and advanced a girl to the semifinals in singles play. Not to mention, a few other girls won multiple matches today. Our goal was to come out here, play a lot of matches and compete well. We're looking forward to getting to play one more day tomorrow."
The tandem of
Ascúa (Santa Fe, Argentina/Domingo G. Silva) and
Curtis (Tampa, Fla./Allendale Academy) made program history as they became the first doubles team to win a tournament championship. After recording a pair of wins in the 'B' draw Friday, Ascúa and Curtis continued to gel as a duo by defeating UCF's Monica Matias and Clare Mendell (6-4) in the semifinal round before advancing to the finals and taking down USF's Nicole Dzenga and Vanja Klaric (6-0).
Also in doubles play,
Elizabeth Means (Washington, D.C./Wiregrass Ranch HS) and
Breana Stampfli (Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago/St. Joseph's Covenant) went 2-0 on the day and won the 'A' draw north consolation bracket. After trailing 5-4 and facing match point, the duo came from behind to defeat Miami's Clara Tanielian and Ana Madcur (7-5) in the finals. Similarly,
Alexandra Landert (Zurich, Switzerland/Seton Hall) and
Joselyn Treyes Albarracin (Guayaquil, Ecuador/InterAmerican Academy) won two matches on Saturday to win the 'B' draw north consolation bracket after defeating teams from FAU and Bethune-Cookman.
Individually,
Falceto Font (Zaragoza, Spain/El Pilar Maristas Zaragoza), who was one of five Eagles to advance to the quarterfinal round, won her lone singles match of the day and advanced to Sunday's semifinal round. She fell behind to Bethune-Cookman's Alejandra Vidal after a 3-6 defeat in the first set, but responded well in her first collegiate tournament and rallied to win the final two sets 6-2, 6-1.
In 'A' draw singles play, Stampfli responded well from a first-round loss on Friday and went 2-0 on Saturday to advance to the back draw semifinal round. Stampfli began the morning by defeating Stetson's Maja Salibasic (6-4, 6-3) and went on to also down FAU's Ana Gutierrez (6-4, 6-3) in the late morning session.
