CORAL GABLES, Fla. – After beginning the season with a five-set victory, the FGCU volleyball team dropped two games to high-level opponents at the Hurricane Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 30 to fall to 1-2 on the season. The Eagles were narrowly edged by Seton Hall University 3-2 in the morning contest before falling in a sweep to the University of Miami in the prime time matchup at Miami's Knight Sports Complex.
The Eagles started strong against the foe from the Northeast with wins in sets one and two (25-23, 25-14), but dropped sets three and four (25-19, 25-16) to send the match to a decisive fifth set. The final set saw eight tie scores, including four in double-figure points, and was ultimately decided in extra points. Despite a strong effort, the Eagles were edged 17-15 in the fifth to fall 3-2 against the BIG EAST opponent.
In the evening bout, the Eagles struggled to match the ACC team's athleticism and skill. FGCU fell by scores of 25-10, 25-19 and 25-17 to drop the three-set match.
"This season is going to be a work in progress," explained head coach
Matt Botsford. "But he overriding theme should be that the season provides us an upwards trajectory. We don't want to fixate on a single day because we know that even when there are dips, two weeks from now we will better than we are today. After a day like today, we know better what we need to work on and what we need to prepare better for. I know that from a player's perspective this is disappointing, but from a coaching prospective, it is a valuable resource."

The second set proved to be a more even battle, with the teams tying on points 4, 6, 7 and 9. Miami took a brief lead at 12-9 but the Eagles gained composure and rallied to tie the set again at 17. However, after an FGCU timeout, the Hurricanes outscored the Green and Blue 5-2 for the remainder of the set and went up 2-0 with a 25-19 second-set win.
