FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball fell to Northern Kentucky, 3-2 (25-23, 25-22, 20-25, 23-25, 11-15), on Senior Night to end the Atlantic Sun regular season.
The Green and Blue, who won the A-Sun regular season title and will be the No. 1 seed in the A-Sun Tournament, fell to 22-9 overall (16-2 A-Sun), while the Norse improved to 24-8 overall (12-6 A-Sun).
Junior Kaitlin Holm (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Marshall) led the team with 10 kills and six blocks. Sophomore Olivia Mesner (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River HS) finished with nine kills, four digs and three blocks. Seniors Brittany Muse (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto County HS), Brooke Kohler (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter HS/Clemson) and Lindsey Childs (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./South Plantation HS) had solid performances on the court. Muse finished with nine kills and five digs, Kohler racked up seven kills and six digs and Childs registered eight kills and seven digs. Sophomore Whitney Masters (Muncie, Ind./Wapahani HS) finished with 27 digs, while the setting duo of sophomore Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) and junior Courtney Greenberg (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Juniata College) racked up 44 assists and 22 digs combined.
After fighting to take the fourth set, NKU seemed to carry all the momentum over to the decisive fifth set. The two teams battled to a 9-9 tie before Kelly Morrissey blasted a kill to give the Norse a 10-9 lead, forcing FGCU to burn a timeout. Following the break, NKU used a 5-2 run to close out the set and pick up the 15-11 win in the final set.
The Green and Blue lost the team dig battle 92-85 and were outhit by Northern Kentucky .166 to .153. The Norse also won the battle in kills (66-55), assists (64-50) and service aces (7-4).
FGCU will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 16 in the second semifinal match of the 2012 A-Sun Tournament. The A-Sun regular season champion and No. 1 seed will face the winner of No. 5 Jacksonville/No. 4 North Florida at 7:30 p.m.
