Still Rollin': Volleyball Defeats Kennesaw State, 3-1, to Extend Winning Streak

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The first place Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team won its 12th consecutive match (11th straight Atlantic Sun Conference match) on Saturday night, picking up a 3-1 (25-22, 25-15, 19-25, 25-20) decision over Kennesaw State.

“This was a good win for us,” said head coach Dave Nichols. “I'm proud of the girls for sticking together and responding after dropping the third set to a very solid Kennesaw State team. Hopefully we can continue to get better and clean up the areas that we need improve in.”

The Eagles, who have only lost six sets in conference play this season, improved to 16-7 overall (11-0 A-Sun), while KSU fell to 16-11 overall (5-7 A-Sun).

Sophomore Jill Hopper (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown HS) blasted a team-high 13 kills and racked up 10 digs to record her seventh double-double of the season. Junior Christine Pinder (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS/Houston/Central Florida CC) and sophomore Olivia Mesner (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River HS) finished with 12 kills and six digs and 11 kills and two blocks, respectively. Junior Kaitlin Holm (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Marshall) chipped in with nine kills, three digs and three blocks. Sophomore Whitney Masters (Muncie, Ind./Wapahani HS) racked up a match-high 20 digs, while the setting duo of sophomore Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) and junior Courtney Greenberg (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Juniata College) racked up 50 assists and 15 digs combined.

FGCU won the team dig battle 60-49 and outhit the Owls .341 to .220. The Eagles hit .300 or better in every set except for the second set where they had a .258 hitting percentage and lost 25-19.

The Green and Blue will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 23 when they head to Jacksonville to take on UNF in conference action. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
