Volleyball Takes Down NKU, 3-1, to Extend Winning Streak

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team won its 10th consecutive match (ninth straight Atlantic Sun Conference match) on Saturday afternoon, earning a 3-1 (16-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-19) decision over the Atlantic Sun's newest member Northern Kentucky.

The Eagles, who sit atop the A-Sun standings and have only lost three sets in conference play this season, improved to 14-7 overall (9-0 A-Sun), while Northern Kentucky fell to 18-4 overall (6-3 A-Sun).

Sophomore Jill Hopper (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown HS) led the Eagles with a match-high 16 kills and six digs. Junior Christine Pinder (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS/Houston/Central Florida CC) and sophomore Olivia Mesner (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River HS) finished with 12 kills each. Mesner also hit a career high .579 during the match. Senior Brittany Muse added nine kills, three digs and two blocks. Junior Kaitlin Holm (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Marshall) chipped in with eight kills. Sophomore Whitney Masters (Muncie, Ind./Wapahani HS) racked up 17 digs, while the setting duo of sophomore Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) and junior Courtney Greenberg (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Juniata College) racked up 46 assists and 12 digs combined.
 
FGCU won the team dig battle 51-49 and outhit the Norse .370 to .351. The Eagles struggled at the start of the match with a .148 hitting percentage in the first set, but hit .318, .607 and .429 in sets two through four.

FGCU will be back in action next weekend when they host Mercer and Kennesaw State in conference action. The Eagles welcome the Bears to Fort Myers on Fri. Oct. 19 (6 p.m.), before facing the Owls at Alico Arena on Sat. Oct. 20 (7 p.m.).
