Eagles Sweep UNF in A-Sun Match

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Freshmen Jill Hopper (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown HS) and Olivia Mesner (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River HS) finished with 10 kills each as the FGCU volleyball squad swept UNF 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-23) Saturday night at Alico Arena.

Mesner hit .238 and added a dig and a block assist, while Hopper finished a pair of digs and a block assists to go with their team-high 10 kills. Kaitlin Holm (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Marshall) blasted eight kills and tallied three block assists. Senior Jelena Simic (Lazarevac, Serbia/Kolubara Technical/Seward County CC) finished with seven kills and 12 digs and freshman setter Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) finished with 31 assists and six digs. Senior libero Holly Youngquist (Estero, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) chipped in with 14 digs and a service ace.

Paige Pridgeon recorded 13 kills to lead North Florida. Casey Giovanazzi added 21 assists and two digs for the Ospreys.

In the opening set, the Eagles jumped out to a 7-3 lead forcing the Ospreys to call a timeout. The Blue and Green continued their dominance in the set, outscoring UNF 9-6 to push their lead to 16-9 and force North Florida to burn their second timeout of the set. Leading 24-21, the Eagles got a kill from Mesner to pick up the 25-21 win in game one.

In the second set, after four ties, FGCU got kills from Mesner and Hopper to pull ahead 11-9. The Green and Blue were in complete control the rest of the set until a kill by UNF's Paige Pridgeon cut the FGCU lead to one at 22-21, forcing head coach Dave Nichols to call a timeout. A kill from Hopper out of the break gave the Eagles breathing room at 23-21 and FGCU went on to win the set 25-22 after Mesner blasted back-to-back kills.

FGCU got off to a great start in game three, as they grabbed an early 18-12 lead thanks to a service ace from Hopper. The Ospreys would try to claw their way back into the match but an UNF attack error broke their momentum and gave the Eagles a 22-16 advantage. FGCU went on to win the set 25-23 to pick up their second consecutive conference victory.

The Eagles will return to the court next weekend when they welcome the Hatters of Stetson (2-9 overall, 0-2 A-Sun) into 'The Nest' on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. Live stats for the match will be available on www.FGCUAthletics.com and the match can be seen live online on A-Sun.TV.
