FORT MYERS, Fla. – FIU hit .390 as a team Tuesday night as the Panthers defeated the Eagles, 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-15), at the US CenturyBank Arena. Four FIU players registered eight or more kills in the sweep.
Jovana Bjelica led the Panthers with a match-high 14 kills, while Andrea Lakovic and Sabrina Gonzalez added 13 kills and 11 kills, respectively, for FIU (18-8). Jessica Egan ran the Panther offense and finished with 39 assists and Chanel Araujo recorded 14 digs.
FGCU (15-12) stumbled out of the gate and finished with a .104 hitting percentage in the match. Freshman Jill Hopper (Muncie, Ind.Yorktown HS) led the Eagles with 11 kills, while adding four digs and a service ace. Senior Jelena Simic (Lazarevac, Serbia/Kolubara Technical/Seward County CC) pitched in with six kills. Setter Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) recorded 17 assists, while senior Holly Youngquist (Estero, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) and freshman Whitney Masters (Muncie, Ind./Wapahani HS) each picked up 10 digs for the Green and Blue.
The Eagles return to the court next weekend when they head to Jacksonville, Fla. to wrap up Atlantic Sun regular season play. FGCU will meet UNF (13-15, 4-7 A-Sun) in on Nov. 11 at 7 p.m., before facing Jacksonville (13-16, 4-7 A-Sun) on Nov. 12 at 5 p.m.
