NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Freshman Jill Hopper (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown HS) recorded her seventh double-double of the season as the FGCU volleyball squad fell at Lipscomb, 3-1 (19-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-25), Saturday afternoon at Allen Arena.
With the loss the Eagles fall to 13-9 overall and 7-2 in A-Sun play, while the Bisons improve to 16-6 (9-0 A-Sun).
Hopper finished with 14 kills, 10 digs and four blocks. Reigning A-Sun Player of the Week Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City HS) hit .321 and chipped in with 14 kills. Redshirt-senior Jelena Simic (Lazarevac, Serbia/Kolubara Technical/Seward County CC) finished with nine kills and eight. Freshman setter Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) racked up 38 assists and added six digs. Senior libero Holly Youngquist (Estero, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) anchored the Green and Blue's defense and chipped in with 24 digs.
Kaycee Green led Lipscomb with 20 kills, while Stephanie Rex and Abby Fay recorded team-highs with 17 digs and 28 assists, respectively.
FGCU took a quick 6-1 lead to open the match, but the Lady Bisons fought back, finally taking a 14-13 lead after a kill from Kaycee Green. The Eagles got a kill from Brook Kohler (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter HS/Clemson) and a Lipscomb attack error to grab a 15-14 advantage, which would be FGCU's last lead of the set as the Bisons went on to win 25-19.
In the second set the Eagles jumped on Lipscomb early. Trailing the Bisons, 13-12, the Green and Blue scored the six consecutive points, highlighted by a service ace and a pair of kills from Hopper, to take an 18-13 lead. The Lady Bisons tied the set at 22-22 on a kill by Charlyn Ursell, before the Eagles scored the final three points of the set to pick up the 25-22 win.
The Lady Bisons quickly got the advantage in set three and with the scored tied 23-23 Lipscomb got kills from Fay and Kaycee Green to close out the win.
In set four the Lady Bisons took a 2-1 lead and had the advantage the rest of the way.
The Eagles return to the court next weekend to take on in-state foe Stetson on Oct. 29 at 3:00 p.m.
