Volleyball Falls at Lipscomb, 3-0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Chelsea Lyles picked up seven kills and Holly Youngquist racked up 11 digs as the Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team dropped a non-conference match at Lipscomb, 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-13) Sunday afternoon at Allen Arena.

With the loss the Eagles fall to 3-11 overall, while the Bisons improve to 11-5 on the season.

After the teams battled to a 10-10 tie to start game one, the Eagles went on to outscore the Bisons 8-5 to take their largest lead (3) of the set, 18-15. Freshman Jessica Barnes' (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City HS) kill gave the Blue and Green the 18-15 lead. Lipscomb responded with a 7-2 run to grab a 22-20 lead and force FGCU to burn a timeout. The Bisons would go on to hold off the Eagles to win game one, 25-22. Sophomore Brittany Muse (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto County HS) and senior Jacqueline Cowden (Danville, Calif./Temple/Monte Vista HS) led FGCU with three kills in the set.

With the score tied at 3-3 in game two FGCU employed a 5-1 run, highlighted by a pair of service aces from junior Holly Youngquist (Estero, Fla./Evangelical Christian) to grab an 8-4 lead and force Lipscomb to call a timeout. After the timeout, the Bisons used a 9-5 run to tie the game at 13-13. Trailing 21-19 senior Chelsea Lyles (Colorado Springs, Col./Western Nebraska CC/Harrison HS) blasted a kill (21-20), but once again Lipscomb was able to hold off FGCU to take the set 25-22.

The Eagles fell behind 12-6 early in game three. A Lipscomb service error, a kill by Muse and a service ace by senior Caitlin Shawver (Lauderdale by the Sea, Fla./Barry/Northeast HS) got FGCU within three points at 12-9, but Lipscomb closed out the set on a 13-4 run to win the match.

Lyles finished with a team-high seven kills, one dig, and one block assist while Cowden finished with six kills and a team-high .286 hitting percentage. Senior Adrianne McNally (Howell, Mich./Pinckney HS) and Muse both chipped in with four kills.

The Eagles will be back in action this weekend when they head to Jacksonville, Fla. to face Jacksonville (Oct. 1) and North Florida (Oct. 2) in A-Sun conference action.

FGCU's next home tilt will be October 15 when they host the Owls of Kennesaw State at Alico Arena at 6 p.m.
