Volleyball Sweeps Kennesaw State, 3-0

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU volleyball team won their third straight match to improve to 9-7 overall and 8-2 in the A-Sun with a 3-0 win (25-12, 25-22, 25-20) over Kennesaw State. With the loss, the Owls fall to 9-8 overall and 4-6 in the conference.

FGCU jumped on the Owls from the start and never let up. The Eagles took a 16-5 lead highlighted by a pair of kills by Jacqueline Cowden (Danville, Calif.) and Chandra Lefever (Fort Morgan, Col.). FGCU would continue to dominate and took game one 25-12 off a service ace by Anna Wagner (Lincoln, Neb.). The Blue and Green hit .444 in the game while limiting KSU to -.033.

In the second set, the Owls put up a fight but FGCU held on and defeated KSU 25-22. FGCU hit .265 in the game while holding KSU to .161 in the second set.

In the third set, FGCU jumped out to a 13-8 lead after a block by Ashley Yance (Fort Myers, Fla.) and Wagner, forcing the Owls to take timeout. A quick 4-1 Kennesaw State run cut the FGCU lead to 14-12, but the Eagles used a run of their own (7-2), highlighted by kills from Jelena Simic (Lazarevac, Serbia), Emma Racila (Fort Myers, Fla.), and Cowden to take a commanding 21-15 lead. The Blue and Green would cruise to a 25-20 win to clinch the match.

FGCU hit .247 in the match, pounding out 38 kills on 89 attempts. The Eagles also served up three aces and posted eight blocks in the match. The Eagles limited the Owls to a hitting percentage of -.011 , while forcing 25 hitting errors.

Simic led the Eagles with 11 kills and eight digs, while Wagner pitched in with seven kills and seven digs.

The Eagles return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 13 when they host the Hatter of Stetson at 6:00 pm in Alico Arena. The match can be seen live on A-Sun.TV.
