Volleyball Picks Up 3-1 Win Over ETSU

FORT MYERS, Fla., - The FGCU women's volleyball team improved to 7-5 overall and 6-0 in the Atlantic Sun with a 3-1 (25-9, 23-25, 26-24, 25-22) win over ETSU. The Bucs fell to 5-9 and 2-5 in the A-Sun. FGCU ran their home winning streak to 29 straight and knocked off their 14th straight A-Sun foe.

“We played pretty sloppy today, we did not block or play good defense today,” said Head Coach Dave Nichols. “We did not play our best, but were fortunate to come out with a win today.”

It appeared that FGCU would cruise to an easy sweep after a dominant 25-9 win in game one. The Eagles hit .500 in the first game and limited the Bucs to just four kills. With the Eagles up 18-14 in the second set, a 3-0 ETSU run cut the Eagles lead to one. The Bucs would go on to force four FGCU errors and pick up four kills to take the second set 25-23.

In the third set, with FGCU up 12-9, the Bucs went on a 6-0 run to take a 15-12 lead. ETSU would push their lead to 21-16. A kill by Ashley Yance and ace by Catilin Shawver cut into the lead. A side out would give the Bucs a 22-18 lead, but a 3-0 FGCU run cut the lead to one. The Eagles would allow just one ETSU point and then even the game at 23 all, forcing an ETSU timeout. The Bucs picked up a kill from Lauren Baufield to take a set point. The Eagles used an ETSU service error to go with a kill by Shawver and an ace by Ana Kokanovic to pull out the 26-24 win.

The Eagles took a 12-6 lead. ETSU would chip away at FGCU's lead, narrowing the margin to 21-20, but the Eagles would outscore the Bucs 4-2 to take a 25-22 win in the fourth set.

Ana Kokanovic had a match high 13 kills and a pair of aces in the match. Roberta Santos added seven kills and 34 assists while serving up a season high six aces. Cheyenne Jenks and Catilin Shawver each picked up nine kills in the match.

McKayla Barber hit .478 while putting away 13 kills for the Bucs while setter Amanda Youell added 11 kills and 19 assists and seven digs. The Eagles served up 13 aces while the Bucs ETSU committed 15 service errors in the match.

The Bucs picked up 49 kills in the match as well.

The Eagles head to Nashville, Tenn., next weekend for a showdown with fellow A-Sun league leader Lipscomb and a match against Belmont.
