Still Making History: Eagles Edge USF in WNIT Play

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Delia De La Torre finished with 20 points and eight rebounds as the FGCU women's basketball team defeated USF 67-65 to advance to the second round of the WNIT.

The Eagles improve to 22-8 overall this season, while the Bulls fall to 16-16. FGCU is now 7-2 in all-time in post season play.

With the win the Eagles became the only current A-Sun school to win a post season game. The last A-Sun team to win a post-season game was FIU in the first round of the 1998 NCAA Tournament, when the Panthers defeated Marquette 59-45 on March 13, 1998. FIU was also the last A-Sun team to win a game in the WNIT. The Panthers defeated Butler 79-75 (OT) in the first round of the 1993 WNIT.

De La Torre (Las Cruces, N.M.) led the Eagles with 20 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including 6-of-9 from the free-throw line. De La Torre also snagged eight rebounds. Ashley Haegele (Imperial, Mo.) chipped in with 14 points and four rebounds. Chelsea Dermyer (Fort Collins, Col.) stepped up huge for the Eagles, finishing with 18 points, including going 5-of-9 from behind the arc, while chipping in five assists and three rebounds.

South Florida guard Shantia Grace led all scorers with 34 points on 11-of-31 shooting, going 11-of-13 from the charity stripe, while adding seven rebounds.

The Eagles hit the road for Round Two of the WNIT, as they travel to Gainesville, Fla. to take on the Gators. Tip-off is set for 7:00 P.M. from the O'Connell Center.
