Eagles Soar Past Spartans To Win Eighth Consecutive Game

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Delia De La Torre recorded a career-high 24 points and four Eagles scored in double figures as the FGCU women's basketball team defeated USC Upstate 71-45 to win their eighth consecutive game.

After pulling ahead 2-0, in the first 0:30 of the game, the Eagles shot 47.5 percent (28-of-59) from the floor, including 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from the three-point line, to stay ahead and defeat the Spartans for their eighth straight conference win of the season.

With the win, FGCU improves to a 13-7 overall record (8-2 A-Sun), while the Spartans fall to 4-19 overall (0-10 A-Sun).

Four Eagles scored in double-figures, led by De La Torre's (Las Cruces, N.M.) 24 points. For the game, De La Torre made 12-of-15 attempts from the field. She also had three rebounds, three blocks and one assist.

Adrianne McNally (Howell, Mich.) and Mandi Pierce (Altoona, Pa.) tallied 11 points each. McNally recorded her first carerr double-double by finishing with 10 rebounds to go with her 11 points. Pierce added three steals, two rebounds and two assists.

Shannon Murphy (Brighton, Mich.) registered 10 points. Murphy recorded one rebound, one assist, one block and one steal, while knocking down 2-of-4 shots from behind the three-point line.

Ashley Haegele (Imperial, Mo.) made her return to the FGCU lineup by finishing with five points, eight rebounds and a career-high seven assists.

Chelsea Dermyer (Fort Collins, Col.) finished the night with four points, four rebounds and 10 assists, which tie her career-high.

USC Upstate was led by Courtney Hawkins' 19 points.

The Eagles will be back in action when they host ETSU for the A-Sun Game of the Week on Monday, February 11 at 7 p.m. The game on Monday night is also "Ladies Night", so every female will receive free admission to the game.
