DeLAND, Fla., The FGCU volleyball team won their 11th straight match with a 3-1 (25-19, 18-25, 25-20, 25-15) win at Stetson. The Eagles improve to 18-6 overall and 16-1 in the Atlantic Sun while Stetson falls to 4-21 and 1-16.
With the score tied at nine in the first set, the Eagles went on a 7-2 run to take a 16-11 lead. FGCU got a pair of kills from Roberta Santos and two from Ana Kokanovic. They built an eight point lead on several occasions, last at 21-13 and took the first set 25-19.
The Hatters jumped out to a 6-2 lead early in the second set. An ace by Holly Youngquist cut the lead to 6-4. From there, the Hatters continued to build on their lead and increased the advantage to 18-10. The Eagles cut into the lead and trimmed the advantage to 21-17, but the Hatters were able to regain the momentum and hold on for a 25-18 win in the set.
FGCU got off to a fast start, going up 6-2. However, a 4-0 run by Stetson evened the set at nine apiece. From there, the set would feature six more ties and the lead changed hands five times before FGCU went on a 4-0 run to take the set 25-20. Cheyenne Jenks had a pair of kills while Kokanovic added one to give FGCU a 2-1 advantage.
In the fourth, the Eagles again got off to a fast start with a 7-2 lead, only to see the Hatters rally and even the score at nine. From that point, the Eagles took control and rolled to a 25-15 win. FGCU used two 4-0 runs to take control. FGCU got a pair of aces from Kokanovic and two kills from Catilin Shawver during the runs.
Stephanie Canfield picked up a team-high 10 kills while Rebecca Orzechowicz added nine. Orzechowicz added 15 digs for the Hatters as well. The Eagles held their 19th straight opponent to under a .250 hitting percentage, holding the Hatters to .186 for the match.
Ana Kokanavich led the Eagles with 15 kills and added 13 digs while Roberta Santos distributed 43 assists and added 10 kills. Cheyenne Jenks and Audrey Campbell each picked up nine kills apiece.
The Eagles can wrap up a share of the Atlantic Sun championship with a win at Campbell on Friday. The match is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
