Men's Hoops Picks Up First A-Sun Win

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., - FGCU won their second straight game with a 70-67 win at North Florida on Thursday night. More importantly, the Eagles won their first Atlantic Sun Conference game to improve to 5-9 overall and 1-0 in the A-Sun while UNF fell to 1-12 and 0-1 in the league.

After falling behind 2-0, the Eagles scored six straight on triples by Rob Quaintance (Glendale, Az.) and Casey Wohlleb (Boca Raton, Fla.). The lead changed hands five times in the opening minutes and saw a pair of ties before FGCU built a 18-12 with 12:53 to go. FGCU maintained that lead until just over two minutes to play when the Ospreys closed the half on a 5-0 run to trim FGCU's lead to 33-32.

FGCU came out on fire in the second half, scoring the first seven points of the half to take a 40-32 lead. Wohlleb hit a pair of short jumpers in transition and Adam Liddell (Auburn, Ind.) added a lay-in. FGCU would maintain the lead until the 11:29 mark when Justin Cecil drilled a three to regain the lead for UNF. Over the next six minutes, the lead would change hands on several occasions and was knotted up at 59 all with 5:14 to play. FGCU then went on a 7-0 run, getting three lay-ups and a free-throw to take a 66-59 lead with 2:18 to play. The Eagles knocked down 3-of-4 from the line in the last 30 seconds to ice the game 70-67.

Four Ospreys reached double figures with Tom Hammonds leading the way with 14. DeVon Jones, Justin Cecil and Cortez Riley added 11 apiece. James Grimball picked up nine and added a game-high 15 boards.

Casey Wohlleb led all players with 22 points. Adam Liddell added 18 for the Eagles on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor. Terike Barrowes (Pompano Beach, Fla.) added 11 to help the Eagles earn their first A-Sun win.

FGCU will be in action again on Saturday when they face Jacksonville at 3:30 pm. The game can be seen on ASun.TV.
