Volleyball Wins Second Straight Tournament

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU volleyball team opened its second day of play in the FGCU Supervolley Tournament by sweeping the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats in dominate fashion (30-10, 29-17, 30-8), while moving to a record of 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at Alico Arena.

The Eagles put on a dominating performance in game one led by Ana Kokanovic (Lazarevac, Serbia) who hit .875 while posting seven kills and Cara Ziegler (Ft. Myers, Fla.) who had 5 kills hitting .667. Roberta Santos (Recife, Brazil) and Brooke Youngquist (Ft. Myers, Fla.) led the charge defensively blocking shots and controlling the net, holding the Wildcats to only 5 kills. The Eagles had all the momentum early as they took game one from the Wildcats 30-10.

Game two started off close with the score tied at 6, but the Eagles slowly pulled away with the victory by a score of 29-17. The Eagles posted 17 kills and hit .394, while the defense was strong once again as they held the Wildcats to just .048 hitting.

The Eagles started off quick in game three as they posted an early 12-2 lead. FGCU was impressive offensively as they hit .429 as a team. Santos completed her strong performance over the Wildcats as she finished the third game with a team high nine kills. The Eagles rolled to a 30-8 win and completed the sweep of Bethune –Cookman and won the Supervolley Tournament.

The FGCU Volleyball team is in action again on September 14 against Elon in Harrisonburg, Va.
