Women's Soccer Earns First A-Sun Win

MACON, Ga., - The FGCU women's soccer team notched their first Atlantic Sun Conference with a 1-0 win over Mercer on Friday night. With the win, the Eagles improve to 5-3, 1-0 in the league while the Bears fall to 2-5-1, 0-1 A-Sun.

The Eagles got on the board early in the first half when Lindsay Haw (Palm City, Fla.) scored as the Eagles were able to draw the Mercer keeper out from the goal. Kelli Haemmelmann (St. Petersburg, Fla.) recorded her second assist of the season while Haw put in her seventh goal of the season. From that point, the Bears controlled the ball for much of the remainder of the first period that was dominated by FGCU keeper Kirsi Keenan (Boca Raton, Fla.). Keenan recorded all five of her saves in the first half. Mercer fired off nine shots in the first half and added four corner kicks. I

n the second period, Haw came out and fired a pair of shots within the first two minutes, but was denied by Mercer Keeper Jean Worts. From that point, the Eagles were able to hold off the Bears and preserve their first conference win with the 1-0 shutout on the road. The Bears outshot FGCU 15-5 and took 13 corner kicks while limiting the Eagles to just four.

The Eagles also committed eight fouls while the Bears were whistled for four fouls. The Eagles will be in action again on Sunday when they travel to Kennesaw, Ga., to face pre-season league favorite Kennesaw State at 1:00 pm.
