Eagles Take Down Gardner-Webb, 60-56, in the Consolation Game at the Cornell Classic

ITHACA, N.Y. - Delia De La Torre and Amanda Pierce both posted career-high point totals with 20 points and 17 points, respectively, as the FGCU women's basketball team earned its second victory as a Division 1 program by defeating A-Sun foe, Gardner-Webb, 60-56, in the Consolation Game of the Cornell Classic.

The Runnin' Bulldogs drop to 2-7 overall, while the Eagles improve to 2-3.

For the game, the Eagles shot 35.1 percent, connecting on 20-of-57 attempts from the field. FGCU also forced Gardner-Webb in 22 turnovers, while only committing 10 miscues.

De La Torre's (Las Cruces, N.M.) 20 point performance earned her a spot on the All-Tournament team and topped her previous career-high, which she set in the Championship Game of the FGCU Thanksgiving Classic (Nov. 24) against Eastern Kentucky. De La Torre also added eight rebounds and a block. Pierce's (Altoona, Pa.) 17 points eclipsed her previous career-high, which she set in the first game of the Cornell Classic against Bowling Green. Pierce shot 5-of-13 (38.5 percent) from the field and 4-of-9 (44.4 percent) from behind the three point line, while also adding two steals, a rebound and an assist.

Margaret Roundtree and Monique Hudson led Gardner-Webb with 14 points and 13 points, respectively. Roundtree shot 7-of-11 (63.6 percent) from the field and added ninie rebounds, while Hudson shot 6-of-12 (50 percent) from the floor. For the game, the Runnin' Bulldogs collectively shot 43.1 percent (25-of-58) from the field.

The Eagles started the game on a 10-4 run, capped off by a Chelsea Dermyer (Fort Collins, Col.) lay-up at the 15:49 mark. FGCU would also use a 13-6 run over an eight minute stretch to make the score 27-16, which gave the Eagles their largest lead of the half (11 points). The 13-6 run was capped off when Ashley Haegele (Imperial, Mo.) grabbed an offensive rebound, kicked the ball out to Candace Carreras (Boca Raton, Fla.), who found a wide-open Delia De La Torre (Las Cruces, N.M.) on the right block for an easy lay-up.

GWU would chip into the Eagles lead and use a 9-2 run over the final 4:23 of the half to go into the locker room trailing 29-25. The Runnin' Bulldogs run was capped when Jessica Bryant grabbed a defensive rebound off of a De La Torre miss and took the ball the length of the court and hit a 15-foot jumper at the buzzer.

In the second half, both teams continued to battle. The Runnin' Bulldogs tied the game at 46 apiece with more than eight minutes left in the game, but FGCU continued to take and make open shots to hold off GWU and win by the final score of 60-56.

The Eagles will next be in action on Dec. 4 when they head to Gainesville, Fla. to take on the Gators of the University of Florida. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
