Volleyball Sweeps Northern Kentucky

FORT MYERS, Fla. '" The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team opened the 2006 season on Thursday night in front of a school record 1429 fans with a 3-0 (30-9, 30-17, 30-22) sweep of Northern Kentucky. The Eagles opened the match on a 17-1 run, including a span in which the Eagles scored 14 straight points. Senior Ericka Fonseca recorded five kills in that opening stretch. The Eagles hit .312 in game one and a stifling defense limited the Norse to a (-.324) hitting percentage and cruised to a 30-9 game one win. Game two saw FGCU jump out to a 9-1 lead, forcing three NKU hitting errors early in the game. The Norse cut the lead to 18-15, but an 8-0 run behind the serving of Whitney Hendry opened the game back up in favor of the Eagles. Hendry had a pair of aces in the run. The Eagles would hold on for a 30-17 win in the second. FGCU again raced to an early lead, this time a 4-1 cushion to start game three. The Eagles steadily built a lead in a game which saw no team score more than four straight points. Heather Van Olst led the attack for FGCU in game three, recording five kills in the decisive game. Tristen Dye led NKU with six kills and also added a team-high three blocks. Andrea Lanham added 23 assists for Northern Kentucky. The Eagles limited the Norse to an (-.058) hitting percentage.
