FGCU Women Move On In First Round Of Independent Tournament

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University women'™s basketball team defeated Johnson and Wales University 66-31 in round one of the Division II National Independent Tournament at Alico Arena. The 26-1 Eagles won their 14th straight game with the win over the Wildcats. At the half the Eagles were up 32-13 after a fast break lay-up by freshman guard Princess Stewart (Deerfield Beach, Fla.). FGCU maintained the lead in the second half, outscoring JWU 34-18. Dominating on offense for the Eagles was junior forward Katie Schrader(Fort Collins, Co) with 15 points, connecting on 6-of-11 in field goals. Schrader also pulled down eight rebounds, two assists and two steals in 23 minutes of play. Schrader, the team leader in points scored, hit the 400 mark this season while averaging 15.4 per game. Stewart posted nine points with four assists, a steal and a rebound. Juniors Alex Nelson from Edinburgh, Scotland and Jen Conely (Warren, MN) tallied seven points and two rebounds each. Junior forward Shonna Soeby (Walhalla, ND) led the team in rebounds with 10, adding six points, and a steal. The Eagles shot 38 percent from the field, 15 percent from 3-point range, and 30 percent from the free-throw line. As a team they had 13 assists, 18 steals to the Wildcats 8 and 18 turnovers to Johnson and Wales 29. Leading scorer for the wildcats was Maria Luis (North Miami Beach, Fla.) with 17 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists. Tomorrow in round two of the tournament the Eagles will take on Claflin University, who defeated Converse College 55-48 in the first round. Game time is 5:00 p.m.
