Men's Basketball Falls in Closing Seconds to Morehouse

FORT MYERS, Fla. '" A game-tying three-point field goal attempt by sophomore Casey Wohlleb rolled in and out as time expired as Morehouse College held on for a 71-68 win Friday night over Florida Gulf Coast University in NCAA Division II men'â„¢s basketball action at Alico Arena.

Wohlleb (Boca Raton, Fla.) had rebounded a missed three-pointer by teammate Cecil Avant (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) with just less than five seconds to go and raced to the right corner for the potential game-tying shot.

FGCU (17-12) had a seven-game win streak snapped. Morehouse improved to 16-11.

The wild finish capped off a game that featured 15 ties and 17 lead changes. Appropriately enough, the game was tied 34-all at intermission. The Eagles had an early 18-11 lead in the opening stanza but the Maroon Tigers, who shot 46.4% in the first 20 minutes, rallied to tie.

Morehouse took the lead for good, 48-47, when William Belton drained a three-pointer from the left wing with 12:49 to play. They capped off a 13-2 run with a three-pointer from Brandon Childs for a 58-50 lead with 8:44 remaining. They led 66-59 with 3:20 to play when the Eagles began to claw back. Junior guard Beau Bauer (Walton, Ind.) hit four free throws, followed by an Adam Liddell (Auburn, Ind.) three-pointer from the right corner and a pair of free throws from senior guard Gabe Pean to cut the lead to 69-67 with 1:06 left.

A missed jumper and missed free throw gave FGCU two opportunities to tie or take the lead before Morehouse'â„¢s Edward Pollard hit 1-fo-2 from the line to make it 70-67. Avant answered by making the back end of a two-shot foul to make it 70-68. After hitting a free throw to make it 71-68, Belton missed the back end of a 1-and-1 with 15 seconds to play.

Bauer posted his second consecutive double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds while Liddell added 14 points for the Eagles. Belton had 21 points and Childs added 20 points for the Maroon Tigers.

FGCU closes out the regular season tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. when it hosts Albany State.
