'" The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team won its final two matches in the Amerihost/Grand Valley State Fall Classic in Allendale, Mich. on Saturday, sweeping Lake Superior State (30-26, 30-24 and 30-18) and Wheeling Jesuit (30-13, 30-27, and 30-21). The Eagles won three of their four matches over the weekend to improve to 6-1 on the season.
In the first match of the day, junior middle blocker
Ericka Fonseca (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) led FGCU with 17 kills and three block assists. Sophomore
Tamra Grigsby (West Palm Beach, Fla.) added 15 kills. On defense, sophomore hitter
Heather Van Olst (Loxahatchee, Fla.) led the Eagles with 17 digs. Junior setter
Laura Manovill handed out 39 assists.
FGCU posted its third shutout of the tournament in the nightcap behind 13 kills each from Fonseca and sophomore outside hitter
Brooke Youngquist (Fort Myers, Fla.). Leading the defensive effort was sophomore
Whitney Hendry (Fort Myers, Fla.) with 25 digs. Manovill posted her first double-double of the season with 37 assists and 13 digs.
FGCU concludes its eight-match road trip with four matches in the Armstrong Atlantic State Pirate Volleyball Classic in Savannah, Georgia next weekend. FGCU will face Francis Marion College in the tourney opener on Friday, September 9 at 10 a.m.
