FGCU Volleyball Upsets No. 20 Barry

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. '" The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team upset No. 20 Barry University in four games (30-24, 30-23, 21-30, 30-21) for their fourth straight win. The Eagles lost twice to the defending national champion Buccaneers (8-7) last season. This was the first of two match-ups between the teams in 2005. They will meet again October 21 at Alico Arena. The Eagles outshot the Buccaneers 69 kills to 65, with a hitting percentage of .369 as a team. Running a six-two offense, junior Laura Manovill (Dunedin, FL) and freshman Ciara Sandoval (Fort Myers, FL) led a well balanced front row with five hitters in double-digits and four hitting above .400. Manovill collected 25 assists with five digs and Sandoval put up 36 assists with four digs. Leading the Eagles on offense was junior Erika Fonseca (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) who collected 17 kills with a .556 hitting percentage. Fonseca also posted two block assists, one service ace and three digs. Sophomores Heather Van Olst (Loxahatchee, FL) and Brooke Youngquist (Fort Myers, FL) both dominated on the outside. Van Olst put down 10 kills and had four digs while Youngquist posted yet another double-double with 12 kills and 16 digs. Junior middle hitter Melissa Duffield (Cedar Rapids, IA) led the team in hitting percentage with a season high of .667. Duffield posted 11 kills out of 15 and two block assists. Senior Devon Watts (Somerville, TX) played as a right-side hitter versus Barry and collected 14 kills with a .429 percentage and two block assists. On defense, sophomore Whitney Hendry (Fort Myers, FL) led the team with 15 digs. Leading hitter for the Buccaneers was Samara de Freitas (So., Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) with 19 kills with a .140 hitting percentage. She was led by setter Michele Rosamiglia (Sr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) who collected 56 assists one kill and six digs. The (13-2) Eagles will play Florida Tech University this Saturday, October 1 at home in Alico Arena at 4:00 pm.
