Jen Conely scored 20 points as no. 20 Florida Gulf Coast University knocked off the University of Montevallo 77-48 in the 3rd Annual Women'â„¢s Holiday Classic Friday night at Alico Arena. FGCU improves to 14-1 while Montevallo falls to 4-8.
Conely hit 6-of-11 from beyond the three-point line against the UM zone in the game, and has now hit 13 three-pointers in her last two games. Junior forward
Alex Nelson hit five three-pointers for a career-high 15 points and senior guard
Candy Myers had a trio of three-pointers and 15 points for the Eagles. Junior forward Katie Schrader pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for FGCU.
FGCU scored the first six points of the game and jumped out to a 17-9 lead in the first nine minutes of the game. The Eagles held the Falcons to just three points over a six-minute stretch and extended their lead to 12 at the half, 37-25, as Conely scored 14 points in 13 minutes of action.
The Falcons managed to pull within nine points, 43-34, with 15:47 remaining in the game. Nelson then engineered a 17-0 FGCU run with four three-pointers over the next 5:29 for a 60-36 lead. The Eagles shot 42% from the floor, including 14-of-31 from three-point territory. FGCU forced 23 turnovers and had 13 steals. .
The Falcons, who were held to 34% from the field, were led by Trellice Moore'â„¢s 14 points and 13 points from Malissa Harris.
In the the other women'â„¢s second day Holiday Classic match-up, Queens College (NY) knocked off Eckerd College 80-71 in overtime.
FGCU concludes its seven-game home stand against Florida Southern on Saturday, January 7 at 7:00 p.m.
