#20 FGCU Women Defeat Christian Brothers

FORT MYERS, Fla. '" The No. 20 Florida Gulf Coast University women'™s basketball team defeated Christian Brothers University 67-51 in a Division II South Region match-up in the 3rd Annual FGCU Classic at Alico Arena on Tuesday night. The Eagles won their 12th consecutive game to open the season. Christian Brothers fell to 6-2. FGCU jumped out to a quick 13-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game behind six quick points from junior forward Katie Schrader. But Christian Brothers answered with an 18-3 run, keyed by eight points from Carley Wright, to take a 20-16 lead. The Eagles then responded with a 21-5 spurt to close the half, highlighted by a pair of three-pointers from seniors Alex Kwiecinska and Candy Myers to take a 37-25 lead at the half. Myers had 12 first-half points to lead the Eagles. The Bucs came out and scored the first four points of the second half to cut the lead to eight at 37-29. Alex Nelson responded with a three-point play and Ebonie Halliburton followed with a pair of free throws to push the lead back to 13 at 42-29. CBU pulled back to within nine on a Kelli Gross trey, 44-35, but FGCU followed with an 11-4 spurt to open their biggest lead at 55-39 with 9:34 remaining. The Bucs never got closer than 12 the rest of the way. Christian Brothers, which came in allowing an average of just 51 points per game, allowed more than 55 points for the first time in eight games. FGCU shot 37.5% from the floor and 73.9% from the foul line while holding the Bucs to 31.4% from the field. The Eagles held a 44-33 rebounding advantage. Schrader finished with 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds, both game-highs, to lead FGCU. Myers scored 14 points while Nelson added eight points. Halliburton and Kwiecinska had six points apiece. Wright led Christian Brothers with 14 points off the bench. Crystal Shelton had 13 points and seven rebounds for the Bucs. CBU will face Missouri Western tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Alico Arena while FGCU host Arkansas-Monticello at 3 p.m.
