FORT MYERS, FL '" Florida Gulf Coast University overcame a sluggish start to beat Eckerd College (30-23, 30-17, 30-21) for a three-game victory at Alico Arena on Tuesday night to improve their record to 13-1. Eckerd dropped to 5-3.
The Tritons did not look like a team that has only played one match since September 4. After FGCU jumped out to a 19-15 lead, Eckerd rallied to tie the game at 23-23 and took their first lead at 28-27 before a pair of service points from junior
Devon Watts (Somerville, TX), capped by a game-winning kill by senior
Kristy Hartley (Naples), gave the Eagles the win. FGCU took early leads in games two and three and went on to post their seventh straight three-game victory.
Watts led the offense with 15 kills in the match, while freshman
Heather Van Olst (Loxahatchee) added 10. Sophomore setter
Laura Manovill (Dunedin) continued her steady play with 25 assists and five kills. The Eagles had 11 team blocks to the Tritons six.
FGCU heads to Lakeland on October 5 for a showdown with nationally ranked Florida Southern. The Mocs are currently 22nd in the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association poll.
