The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team made its Alico Arena debut with a convincing three-game sweep of Nova Southeastern University on Wednesday night in front of the largest crowd this year to watch a NCAA Division II South Region match. In front of 678 fans, the Eagles overcame a slow start to down the Knights 30-21, 30-15, 30-10. Senior middle blocker Kristy Hartley (Naples) posted a double-double with 10 kills and 12 blocks while adding three service aces for the 8-1 Eagles. Freshman libero Whitney Hendry (Fort Myers) totaled 20 digs and junior Ingrid Felicio (Sarasota) added eight digs to lead a stellar defensive effort for FGCU. Sophomore hitter Karla Ortiz led Nova Southeastern (1-9) with six kills, while sophomore libero Itza Miranda recorded 15 digs. After holding a slim 15-14 lead, Hartley sparked the Eagles on a 15-7 run to seal the first game. FGCU controlled games two and three easily to post its fifth 3-0 sweep of the young season. The Eagles return to Alico Arena on Friday, September 17 as they host Saint Leo University at 7 p.m.
