CHICO, Calif. – In a field that included the top-six ranked NCAA Division II teams in the nation, the Florida Gulf Coast University men's golf team posted three straight rounds of 297 while finishing sixth in the 13-team Chico State Wells Fargo Men's Invitational in Chico, Calif., on Tuesday.
Senior
Joey Lamielle (Sarasota Booker) led FGCU with a three-round total of 220, good enough for a 16th-place finish. Sophomore
Joe Hays (Walton, KY) shot 224, junior
Drew Pierson (Lockport, IL) added a 226 while senior
David Steele (Bonita Springs/Estero) and sophomore
Alister Munro (Deventer, Holland) each carded 226's for the Eagles. Lamielle's even-par 72 on Tuesday was the Eagles best single-round performance in the tournament.
The Eagles finished with a three-round total of 891. California State University-Bakersfield shot 291 in the final round to come from two strokes back to win by one stroke over runner-up St. Martin's College with a score of 866.
Both the Eagle men's and women's golf teams will play at the 2004 NSU/Unnico Invitational in Davie beginning on Monday.
