FORT MYERS, Fla. – Fresh off a weekend sweep at Stetson, FGCU will head to Miami for the third and final meeting against FIU this season on Wednesday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at FIU Baseball Stadium and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
QUICK LINKS
While the Eagles (29-17) have won three straight coming into Wednesday's contest, FIU is coming off a weekend Conference USA series at Delaware in which they were swept. The Panthers were set to play at Miami on Tuesday night, but the playing surface at Mark Light Field were apparently unplayable due to overnight conditions, and the game was canceled.
The Green & Blue has recorded two wins over FIU this year and has won five straight over the Panthers. A win on Wednesday would mark the second consecutive year FGCU has swept Florida International in the season series.
Much noise has been made of FGCU's offense – and for good reason – this season, but the pitching has been just as impressive. The Eagles are averaging 10.4 strikeouts per nine innings this season, a mark that is expected to set a school record and one that ranks 20
th nationally. FGCU is also 24
th in the nation in strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.59), 41
st in ERA (.451), 43
rd in WHIP (1.38) and 69
th in walks allowed per nine innings (4.02). Florida Gulf Coast leads the ASUN in all of those categories.
A win on Wednesday would also make FGCU be the ASUN's first 30-win team this season. That would be
Dave Tollett's 17
th team in his 24 years at FGCU to record 30-or-more wins.
FIU has struggled away from home this season (1-18), but the Panthers are 14-14 when playing at FIU Baseball Stadium in Miami. Florida International leads Conference USA in one category – getting hit by pitches as it has happened 90 times this season.
Following Wednesday's game, FGCU will return home to host West Georgia in an important ASUN series. Sunday's game against the Wolves has been moved to 11 a.m. to accommodate West Georgia's flight home. Friday's game (6:30 p.m.) and Saturday's game (5 p.m.) remain at their regularly scheduled times.
