BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University men's soccer team suffered a setback on Thursday evening with a 2-1 loss to in-state rival Florida Atlantic University on the road. The setback brings the Eagles' season record to 4-6-2 overall.
Â
The Owls (8-2), who received votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll, scored an early goal as Matthew Alfred netted his first goal of the season in the ninth minute of play for a 1-0 lead.
Â
However, Florida Gulf Coast answered back just 10 seconds later as
Jose Bustamante assisted a right-footed shot from
Salvador Martinez Romo into the bottom left corner of the net to even the score at one goal apiece. The goal was Martinez Romo's second of the season, while Bustamante collected his first assist of the season.
Â
In a game marred by 30 total fouls, Florida Atlantic proved to be the aggressor in the second half with six shots in the period compared to just two by the Eagles.
Â
FAU was able to break through with the eventual game-winning goal in the 80th minute of play as Ethan Schumaker was in the right place at the right time to score his second goal of the year. The goal came after FGCU keeper
Nicolas Leite turned away a shot, but Schumaker was in position to finish a rebound into the back of the net.
Â
Leite, starting his second straight match in goal and fourth of the season, finished the match three saves, while five different Eagles recorded a shot in the contest.
Â
The Eagles return to action on Saturday, Oct. 11 as they remain on the road for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff against Jacksonville University in Atlantic Sun play.
