FORT MYERS, Fla. – Head FGCU baseball coach
Dave Tollett has announced the 2022 schedule as the Eagles are set to kick off their 20th season on February 18.
The Eagles will play 55 games, highlighted by 21 games against teams who made NCAA regionals in 2021 as well as 22 games against teams that finished in the top 100 of the RPI. FGCU will not have to leave the Sunshine State much this season as 49 games will take place in Florida, including the ASUN Tournament, which will be hosted by the Eagles in Fort Myers.
"This is one of the toughest schedules we've ever had," said head coach
Dave Tollett. "Our non-conference schedule is definitely going to be challenging, but it will help us get prepared for a very strong ASUN. If we do what I think we can do, I believe it will pay off in the end."
There will be no easing into the season for the Green and Blue as nine of their first 12 games will be against high-major opponents, beginning with Cincinnati at Swanson Stadium on opening weekend. The matchup between the Eagles and Bearcats will feature two of the best players in their respective conferences as redshirt junior
Brian Ellis (Oviedo, Fla/Hagerty HS) was recently named Collegiate Baseball News ASUN Projected Player of the Year while Cincinnati's Paul Komistek was named AAC Preseason Player of the Year.
FGCU then welcomes Minnesota to Fort Myers for a single game before hitting the road for the first time when they play three games at Bethune-Cookman.
The Eagles return home for a midweek game against St. Bonaventure on March 2 before hosting perennial Big East contender Seton Hall for three games. The weekend series with the Pirates is followed by a single game in Tallahassee against national powerhouse and 15th-ranked Florida State on March 8.
FGCU returns home for three games Fairfield from March 11-13. The Stags are coming off a 39-5 season in which they finished the year ranked seventh in the RPI after earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles will then host North Dakota State, another team who qualified for regionals in 2021, for one game on March 16.
ASUN play follows which will be different this season as the Eagles will play home-and-home series only against teams within their division. With the additions of #25 Liberty and Kennesaw State to the East Division, it quickly becomes one of the toughest conferences in the nation.
The Eagles open ASUN conference play on the road against Stetson before returning home for a midweek game against South Florida and three games against Jacksonville.
FGCU will then host Miami (Fla.) on March 30, the first of three meetings between the two schools in 2022. The Eagles follow that game with a home series against Kennesaw State before going to Coral Gables for a game against the Hurricanes on April 5.
Four more games on the road follow with three at Liberty and one at South Florida before the Eagles return for seven straight at home, beginning with three against North Florida before one contest against FAU and three against Stetson.
Back on the road for the last week of April, the Eagles will make a return-trip to FAU and then head up to Jacksonville for three games. After exams, they will head to Atlanta to take on Kennesaw State from May 6-8 before returning home for their final home series of the season against Liberty the following weekend.
The Eagles will play once more at Miami (Fla.) on May 17 before closing out the regular season at North Florida for three games.
Finally, the ASUN Tournament rolls into Fort Myers as the Eagles will play host from May 25-28. Most games will take place at Swanson Stadium while a select few will be at JetBlue Park.
