Davenport and Studstill Named FGCU Scholar-Athletes of the Month

A female and male Eagle are chosen as the FGCU Athletics Scholar-Athlete of the Month throughout the academic year. Factors in the selection for this honor include a combination of significant athletic and overall academic success.

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU Athletics Department has announced its 10th and final pair of 2020-21 monthly academic honorees as Reedy Davenport, a junior on the softball team, and Mason Studstill, a senior on the baseball team, have been named the Scholar-Athletes of the Month for May.

A female and male Eagle are chosen as the FGCU Athletics Scholar-Athlete of the Month throughout the academic year. Factors in the selection for this honor include a combination of significant athletic and overall academic success.

Davenport (St. Johns, Fla./Bartram Trail HS) is a nursing major and holds a 3.72 GPA. She's a four-time AD Honor Roll member, three-time President's List recipient, and a Dean's List honoree.

The 2021 ASUN Defensive Player of the Year started 43 of 46 games at shortstop, posting a .977 fielding percentage (four errors) as she led the team in assists (108) while turning five double plays. Davenport led FGCU in RBI (28), doubles (12), and walks (16). Her 26 runs and 40 hits were second on the team while her .317 batting average was good for third.

"Reedy has been great on and off the field for us," said head coach David Deiros. "She does a great job balancing a very tough academic workload while producing at a very high level on the diamond. It's a well-deserved recognition."

Studstill (Titusville, Fla./Rockledge HS/Eastern Florida State/Miami) is pursuing a masters in educational leadership. Overall, he's a three-time AD Honor Roll member and two-time Dean's List recipient.

An ASUN All-Academic and Second Team member, Studstill compiled a 7-3 record with a 3.02 ERA as FGCU's Friday night starter, tossing 83.1 frames in 13 appearances. He fanned 73 batters compared to just 32 walks as he limited opponents to a .223 BA.

"It's great to see Mason being recognized with this honor," said head coach Dave Tollett. "He leads by example and is someone the guys on the team looked up to this season. I'm very proud of the work he's done over the past few years here and excited to see what the future has in store for him."

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 85 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 13+ seasons at the Division I level. Additionally, in just nine seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 40 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Eight FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport - including women's basketball (No. 21, 2020-21), beach volleyball (No. 20, 2021) and both men's soccer (2018, 2019) and women's soccer (2018) as four of the most recent. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.50 GPA in the classroom in the fall 2020 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for 23 consecutive semesters. The 2019 Fall, 2020 Spring, and 2020 Fall semesters each saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher team GPA. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 - being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
