DAYTONA BEACH, FL – Three different members of the FGCU baseball team (3-6) had multi-hit games as the Eagles cruised to a 7-1 win over Bethune-Cookman (4-6) on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
Senior
Cameron Krzeminski (Coral Springs, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas HS) led the team at the plate, finishing his night three-for-three with a pair of RBI. Both seniors
Alex Brait (Viera, FL/Viera HS) and
Richie Garcia (Davie, FL/West Broward HS) cranked out two hits apiece and combined for three RBI.
"By far, I think it was our most complete game," head coach
Dave Tollett said. "We played hard all the way around. We got another great start from Mason and Seb was really solid coming out of the bullpen. It was nice to see us get double-digit hits."
In addition to the team's offensive performance, the night was highlighted by senior
Mason Studstill (Titusville, FL/Eastern Florida State), who earned his second victory of the year. The starter worked for 6.0 innings, allowed one hit and fanned a season-high 10 batters. With his effort, he picked up the fourth double-digit strikeout game of his career at FGCU. Â
Sophomore
Joe Kinker (Northport, FL/Venice HS) got the scoring started for the Green and Blue, as he homered to right center in the top of the fifth. Junior
Brandon Dorsey (Fort Myers, FL/Wallace Dothan CC) came in on the shot, which was Kinker's second of the season, to hand the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
After being held scoreless for six innings, the home team got on the board in the seventh. Junior
Gus Carter (Melbourne, FL/FSW) started off the inning on the bump but handed things over to senior
Sebastian Gruszecki (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill Regional HS) after allowing a pair of baserunners on. Gruszecki struck out the first batter he faced before an RBI single cut FGCU's lead down to 2-1 as the inning came to a close. Â
In the eighth, the Eagles put up a four-spot to re-distance themselves from the Wildcats. Brait and Garcia got the spree started with back-to-back RBI singles that scored junior
Brian Ellis (Oviedo, FL/Hagerty HS) and senior
Marc Coffers (Naples, FL/Barron Collier HS). Krzeminski later rounded out the scoring with a hit that plated both Kinker and Brait.
FGCU's final run of the night came in the ninth frame when Ellis crossed the plate. The Wildcats went down in order in their last chance in the batter's box, as Gruszecki struck a pair out and forced a fly out while earning his first save of the season. With tonight's victory, the Eagles have also earned their first road win of the 2020 season.
The teams will reconvene at Jackie Robinson Ballpark at 3 p.m. on Saturday for game two of the series. The finale is slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
