Lumbert selected by the Giants in the 24th round of the MLB Draft

The righty is the first Eagle to be drafted this season and the 32nd in program history.

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The San Francisco Giants selected senior right-handed pitcher Evan Lumbert in the 24th round of the 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft Wednesday afternoon.

Lumbert (Orlando, FL/Boone HS/South Florida State) was the first Eagle to be selected in this year's draft with the 714th overall pick. His selection marks head coach Dave Tollett's 32nd draft pick in the program's 17-year history.

"We're extremely happy for Evan," head coach Dave Tollett said. "It's great that he gets to continue his career after all he's accomplished at FGCU. He works really hard and I know that he will continue to do that as he moves forward."

Lumbert becomes the third Eagle to be selected by the Giants, joining 2012 right-handed pitcher Jason Forjet and 2013 second baseman/short stop Brandon Bednar.

In just two seasons at FGCU, Lumbert established himself as a key part of the Green and Blue starting rotation. In his inaugural season with FGCU, he appeared in 14 games and made 10 starts. Following a knock-out appearance against Miami, where he struck out 12 through eight innings of work, he was awarded ASUN Pitcher of the Week honors. He also downed No. 22 FAU, throwing 5.2 innings of one-run baseball against the Owls. He finished the 2018 season 6-3 with a 3.11 ERA, striking out 66 and allowing 19 walks over 63.2 innings of work.

During his senior campaign, the starter built on his ability to knock off top-ranked teams. He earned the win at No. 5 Florida after taking a perfect game into the seventh inning and was tabbed ASUN Pitcher of the Week for the second time in his career on the following Monday. When the 2019 regular season championship came down to the final match up in the three-game series against Liberty, Tollett started Lumbert on the mound and the Eagles collected the win and their fifth regular season crown. In his final season suiting up for the Green and Blue, Lumbert posted a 6-3 record with a 3.95 ERA.

Lumbert finished his career with a 3.56 ERA and a 12-6 record through 28 appearances. He struck out 130 batters against 58 walks and allowed 54 earned runs.

6X CHAMPS
The 2017 season was a magical one for the Green and Blue that ended in the program's first Division I NCAA Championship tournament berth. The Eagles ended the year 43-20, which included a midweek sweep over No. 2 Florida, single wins over No. 1 Florida State, Miami, and a three-game sweep at UNC Wilmington. The wins over Miami, FSU, and UF marked the first time FGCU defeated all three programs in the same season.

Reaching as high as No. 9 in the polls, the highest of any program at FGCU, the Eagles struggled in April but bounced back to finish third in the ASUN. During the ASUN Championship, FGCU won four games in a span of 29 hours for their first tournament crown.

The Green and Blue earned the No. 2 seed in the Chapel Hill Regional, defeating Michigan 10-6 before losses to Davidson and North Carolina ended their season. The tournament title added to FGCU's four regular season crowns.
