Carroll, Tebet named FGCU Scholar-Athletes of the Month

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU Department of Athletics has announced its final 2018-19 monthly academic honorees. Beach volleyball's Amanda Carroll and men's tennis Marcelo Tebet were named the Scholar-Athletes of the Month for May.

A female and male Eagle are chosen as the FGCU Athletics Scholar-Athlete of the Month throughout the academic year. Factors in the selection for this honor is based on a combination of significant athletic and overall academic success.

Carroll (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS) graduated this spring with a 3.91 GPA, obtaining her bachelor's degree in communications with a minor in sociology and critical theory. She landed on the President's List four times while making the Dean's List three times during her undergraduate studies. Carroll will soon pursue a graduate degree in educational leadership.

On the sand courts this past season for the Eagles, Carroll produced an overall 18-11 record at the No. 1 spot with Kirstine Garder – the 18 wins were a career-high and tied for the fifth most in a season in program history. All said she capped the year off with 50 wins (third in program history) and her 41 victories at the top flight sits atop the FGCU record book – 17 more than the next closest athlete.

"This is a fitting honor for Amanda as she closed out her beach volleyball career here at FGCU securing her 50th total win against one of the nation's best pairs (Stetson) in her final match," said head coach Matt Botsford. "She played a major role in helping guide our team to the ASUN championship final, and as we have grown accustomed to, performed at the highest levels when she was needed most. On top of what Amanda was accomplishing out on the court, she remained focused in the classroom and completed the semester with all A's. That ability to balance academics and athletics is a special trait and one that she has demonstrated throughout her entire stay here at FGCU."

Tebet (Londrina, Brazil/Colégio Anglo Americano) carries a 3.30 GPA while pursuing a bachelor's in interdisciplinary entrepreneurship. He's a three-time Athletics Director's Honor Roll recipient and landed a spot on the Dean's List this past spring semester.

The junior ended his spring campaign with a 12-5 overall singles record, going 8-0 at the No. 4 slot (5-1 in ASUN play). On the doubles side, Tebet teamed up with Juan Montes on court No. 2 to produce a 6-1 record. On top of winning the regular season title, the Brazil native clinched the ASUN Championship title for the Eagles in a thrilling 7-5 third set match over UNF to give FGCU its third NCAA Tournament berth as he was named the ASUN Tournament MVP.

"Marcelo won our award this year for the team's highest GPA. He put together two very solid semesters shortly after coming to the U.S.," said head coach CJ Weber. "Not only is he a very bright student, he's also a very professional and mature young man. Marcelo possess the daily commitment needed every day to be successful in life."
