@FGCU_MGolf Returns To Action At Patriot Intercollegiate Sunday And Monday

LORTON, Va. – The FGCU men's golf team will continue its 2016-17 season Sunday and Monday, Sept. 25-26, at George Mason University's Patriot Intercollegiate at Laurel Hills Golf Club.

Coming off a 12th-place finish last weekend at the EKU Intercollegiate, FGCU will be teeing it up against another large field as in addition to the host Patriots and Eagles there are 17 other teams in the field. However, only #132 Old Dominion ranks ahead of #139 FGCU in the field based on the most recent Golfstat Rankings.

The teams will begin action on Sunday with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. and play 36 continuous holes before concluding with 18 holes on Monday. Live scoring is available all tournament via Golfstat by clicking here.

Head coach Eric Booker will be utilizing the following five-man lineup:

1. Keaton Jones (Kitchener, Ontario/St. Mary's HS)
2. Grant Renegar (McComb, Miss./Meridian CC/Parklane Academy)
3. Andrew Potter (Naples, Fla./Community School of Naples)
4. Brent Fredericksen (Staten Island, N.Y./Saint Peter's Boys HS)
5. Casper Howells (London, England/Bradford College)

Jones, Potter and Howells all competed last week at the EKU Intercollegiate, with Jones leading the way with a three-round 211 (+1) total to finish in a tie for 12th overall and earning an exemption from Booker into this week's tournament. The senior posted rounds of 3-over 73, 3-under 67 and 1-over 71 to secure not only his lowest tournament finish as a collegiate golfer but also his lowest tournament score by seven strokes. The 2nd-round 67 was four shots better than his previous career low.

Howells and Potter finished tied for 41st and 52nd, respectively, at the EKU Intercollegiate. Howells opened with a team-best 70 in the 1st round before closing with a pair of 74s while Potter shot 71-74-75.

Renegar makes his debut for the Green and Blue after transferring from Meridian Community College in Mississippi. The junior was an NJCAA Division II All-American Second Team member last year with a 72.08 stroke average. He claimed his first collegiate victory at the 2016 Mississippi College Invitational with a 7-under 209 three-round total and later in the year helped MCC to an 8th-place finish at the national tournament with a four-round 296 (+8).

Freshman Fredericksen posted the second-best scoring average in the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) in the New York City area last year as a senior at only .4 over par. He led his team to the 2015 CHSAA City Golf Championship title and was named the 2016 Metropolitan PGA Junior Player of the Year.

The quintet will be playing the par-71, 6,903-yard layout at Laurel Hills Golf Club. Designed by Bill Love, the course was built on land that formerly housed the D.C. Department of Corrections facility in Northern Virginia.

No team in the field this weekend has claimed the Patriot Intercollegiate previously. West Florida won last year's title at -5, Missouri claimed the crown in 2014 (-1) and 2012 (-2) and Marshall emerged victorious in 2013 with a winning score of +9.

Four teams in the field this weekend competed in the EKU Intercollegiate last weekend, including host and tournament champion EKU. The Colonials posted an 828 (-12) total to finish as the only team under par on their home course. In addition to EKU, Longwood (852) finished in 5th place, George Mason (861) ended up in 8th place and FGCU (866) capped its aforementioned 8th-place showing.

Following the Patriot Intercollegiate, FGCU will quickly be back in action at FAU's Match Play event in Boca Raton on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1-2.
