BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The FGCU men's golf team will be teeing it up in its fourth tournament in as many weeks when the Eagles head to Western Kentucky University's Kenny Perry Invitational at The Club at Olde Stone Oct. 10-11.
Â
The 54-hole event will begin with rounds 1 and 2 on Monday as FGCU's golfers will head out in 10-minute increments off the 10th tee beginning at 8:20 a.m. The Eagles will be paired with Fort Wayne and Belmont and play continuously until the 36 holes are completed. Teams will repaired and sent out in threesomes for Tuesday's final round beginning with tee times at 8 a.m.
Â
Head coach
Eric Booker will be utilizing the same 5-player lineup which last weekend won the FAU Dual:
Â
#1 Keaton Jones (Kitchener, Ontario/St. Mary's HS)
#2 Casper Howells (London, England/Bradford College)
#3 James Leadbetter (Bradenton, Fla./Arkansas/IMG Academy)
#4 Grant Renegar (McComb, Miss./Meridian CC/Parklane Academy)
#5 Robert Renner Jr. (Arlington Heights, Ill./Saint Viator HS)
Â
The quintet will be competing as part of a 12-team field and a pair of top-40 teams nationally, according to the most recent Golfweek Rankings, in Kentucky (33) and Eastern Kentucky (39). The par-72 Olde Stone layout features bentgrass fairways and greens and was designed by Arthur Hills – the same architect who is responsible for Miromar Lakes Beach and Golf Club next to campus and The Sanctuary Golf Club in Sanibel Island.
Â
Jones – who has five par-or-better rounds this season – has easily been FGCU's most consistent performer so far this year as he leads the team with a stroke average of 70. Three of the senior's seven rounds have been in the 60s, while the rest of the Eagles have two total rounds below 70.
Â
Howells is the only other member of the Green and Blue to have competed in all three invitationals this year and has a stroke average of 73.14 with two par-or-better rounds and one of them in the 60s.
Â
Leadbetter commenced his 2016-17 season with an even-par 72 at the FAU Dual. Renegar won the title with a 6-under 66 – FGCU's best round of the season so far – in the junior transfer's debut with the Green and Blue. Renner Jr. carded a 2-under 70 at the same event in what was also his initial round of the year.
Â
FGCU is coming off an interesting weekend as what began as a four-team match play championship eventually ended up being a head-to-head dual match between FGCU and FAU, with the Eagles winning thanks to a 273 total (-15) compared with the Owls' 276 total (-12).
Â
Play was canceled midway through the second round on Sunday, Oct. 2, because of weather, and the coaches decided to revert back to Saturday's scores, which were contested originally in threesomes with Stetson golfers also included. However, the Hatters, and Bethune-Cookman – which was scheduled to compete but did not show up – did not have their scores count, thus resulting in the dual match.
Â
Renegar fired the aforementioned 6-under 66 at Abacoa Golf Club to finish as the low man. Below are complete results for FGCU's lineup:
Â
1) Renegar: 66 (-6)
3) Howells: 68 (-4)
T4) Jones: 69 (-3)
T6) Renner Jr.: 70 (-2)
10) Leadbetter: 72 (E)
Â
The fall portion of the 2016-17 season for FGCU will conclude on the Eagles' home course, the Jack Nicklaus-designed Old Corkscrew in Estero on Oct. 24-25. The Homewood/Hilton Garden Airport & FGCU Classic will be contested at Old Corkscrew for the third year in a row, and will represent the Green and Blue's lone home tournament of the campaign.
Â
Last year, the Eagles finished 3rd out of 12 schools on one of Southwest Florida's premier tracks. The field will play 36 holes on Monday, Oct. 24, with the final 18 holes to be held on Tuesday, Oct. 25. Admission is free, and the public is welcome to attend.
