@FGCU_MGolf Tees Off At The Atlantic Sun Championship Starting Sunday

BRASELTON, Ga. – In search of its first Atlantic Sun Conference Championship, the FGCU men's golf team is scheduled to begin action in the league tournament Sunday morning from The Legends Course at Chateau Elan.

While pairings have yet to be announced, fans can stay tuned to Twitter by following @FGCU_MGolf for updated information as it becomes available on Saturday and Sunday. Additionally, any changes to the schedule – as inclement weather is expected in the area on Sunday – will first be posted to Twitter and then on FGCUAthletics.com.

Live scoring throughout the three-round invitational will be available on Golfstat and by clicking here. For a one-stop location for all things related to the A-Sun Championship, fans are encouraged to visit the league's championship central page by clicking here or logging on to AtlanticSun.org.

Head coach Eric Booker will utilize the following five-man lineup for the A-Sun Championship:

1) Jake Sherwin (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS)
2) Jordan Miller (Bradenton, Fla./Bradenton Christian HS)
3) Austin Schultz (Lakeland, Fla./Florida Southern College/Lee Virtual Instructional Program)
4) Keaton Jones (Kitchener, Ontario/ St. Mary's HS)
5) Blake Biggs (Peoria, Ill./Eastern Florida State College/Peoria Notre Dame HS)

From a conference tournament standpoint, Sherwin enters as the team's most tenured player as he'll be competing in his third A-Sun Championship. Sophomore Jones and senior Biggs are the only other two FGCU competitors who have A-Sun Championship experience, with Biggs leading the way last year for the Eagles as he finished tied for 22nd overall.

FGCU will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing 10th-place finish last year which also broke a streak of four-straight years with a top-10 individual showing from the Green and Blue.

Edward Figueroa tied for sixth overall (79-71-71/222) in 2013,  Kyle English finished fifth (73-74-69/216) in 2012, Alex Medinis tied for sixth (69-70-73/212) in 2011 for his second top 10, Brandon Pena took sole possession of second (71-77-65/213) in 2010, while Medinis' first top 10 came in 2010 when he tied for ninth (75-72-72/219). Pena's 7-under 65 in 2010 is still an A-Sun Championship final-round record. More FGCU A-Sun records are at the end of this release.

Unique in design, The Legends at Chateau Elan was crafted from the experiences of three great golfing champions: Gene Sarazen, Kathy Whitworth and Sam Snead, who helped architect Denis Griffiths build one of the top-ranked courses in Georgia. The Legends – which will be hosting the A-Sun Championship for the sixth-straight year and seventh time in the last eight seasons – was the home of the Sarazen World Open Championship, a PGA Tour event from 1994 through 1998 to honor Sarazen.

Mercer – now a Southern Conference member – won last year's championship with an 874 score, besting previous two-time champion North Florida. At No. 27, the Ospreys enter the tournament as the top-ranked team in the A-Sun according to Golfweek, while Kennesaw State is close behind at No. 29. A complete list of rankings is at the end of this release.

Sherwin enters the A-Sun Championship not only as FGCU's hottest player, but perhaps the hottest player in the entire field. The junior has finished in the top-6 in each of his last three events, in the top-10 in each of his last five events and in seven of his eight tournaments this year has finished in the top-15. His stroke average of 72.5 easily leads the Eagles, while he is responsible for half (13) of the team's 26 par-or-better rounds this year.

Miller, who did not make the lineup for FGCU's final regular-season tournament, will be teeing it up for the first time since a tie for 33rd out of 113 golfers at the FAU Slomin Autism Invite Mar. 27-29. His stroke average of 74.62 is second on the roster, and he is one of just three players on the team with at least two rounds this year in the 60s, in addition to four par-or-better rounds.

Like Miller, Schultz will be making his A-Sun Championship debut, but he's coming off a career-low 68 in the final round of the Jim West Intercollegiate (Apr. 6-7). The 4-under round was the third-best of the year recorded by a Green and Blue member (two 67s by Sherwin). Over eight tournaments, Schultz has a scoring average of 75.57.

Jones has played in just five tournaments this year, but three of those have come in the last month. He's coming off a steady 220 total over three rounds at the Jim West in which he posted rounds of 74-72-74. With a low round of 71 this season, Jones has added two par-or-better rounds.

While Biggs is FGCU's lone senior, he's perhaps the Eagles' biggest wildcard coming into his final A-Sun Championship. A veteran who finished second on the team last year with 74 birdies and four top-20 finishes, Biggs has struggled this year with no top-20 finishes. He's played in just one spring tournament, but has the talent to significantly impact FGCU's run to the A-Sun Championship. Biggs posted seven rounds of par-or-better last year, carded a 69 and will be looking to end his career on a high note.
