Capan III completes opening round of U.S. Open

Florida Gulf Coast University men's golf alumnus Frankie Capan III completed Thursday's opening round of the 124th U.S. Open Championship from Pinehurst, North Carolina.

In just his second-ever appearance at the U.S. Open, Capan III is currently tied alongside some household names throughout the professional golf world such as Rickie Fowler, Si Woo Kim, Jason Day, Scottie Scheffler and Max Homa. After one, he has even positioned himself higher than Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson and Tiger Woods.

The former Eagle and Korn Ferry Tour player rose as high as T6th on Thursday, checking in at two-under through his first 10 holes. Capan III has enjoyed success at Pinehurst before. He emerged as the 2017 U.S. Amature Four-Ball champion upon the Pinehurst No. 2 course.

Capan III penciled five straight pars to begin his day on the back nine and sank his first birdie on hole No. 15. He would later sink a lengthy birdie opportunity on hole No. 1 to climb to two-under and near the top of the leaderboard late in the opening round.

Over his next six holes, the Minnesota native went three-over with back-to-back bogeys on holes three and four and then on six and seven. Capan composed himself by finishing his day with two pars en route to a one-over 71 scorecard, sitting tied for 34th heading into Friday's second-round coverage.
