FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men's tennis team opened the 2012 dual match season with a 6-1 loss against SMU on Friday at the FGCU Tennis Complex. Junior Jackson Moore (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch HS/Georgia State) picked up the lone singles victory.

FGCU falls to 0-1 on the season and SMU improves to 2-1.

“We knew SMU was going to be a tough team,” said first-year head coach C.J. Weber. “They really played up to their reputation today and competed very well. I was really proud of Jackson (Moore) today as he showed a lot of toughness. He provided the example that we need as a team for this season.”

In doubles, the Eagles fell behind after the team of sophomore Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) and Moore lost, 8-4, to SMU's Gaston Cuadranti and Arturs Kazijevs.

At No. 3 doubles freshmen Tianyu Bao (Tianjin, China/Bayshore HS) and Michael Beiler (Palm Harbor, Fla./Dunedin HS) rallied back from 6-2 down to even the match at 6-6. SMU's team of Robert Sajovich and Mischa Nowicki won two straight games to clinch the doubles point for the Mustangs.

In the final doubles match, senior Matthew Rock (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Fort Lauderdale HS/Jacksonville) and Lance Lvovsky (Dania,Fla./Broward Virtual School/Jacksonville) were tied 6-6, before falling 8-6 to Tobias Flood and Joseph Hattrup from SMU.

In singles action, Moore came away with a victory at No. 4 singles after winning a third set tiebreaker 10-7 against SMU's Flood. Moore won the first set 6-1 but rallied after dropping the second set 4-6 to win the tiebreaker.

At No. 3 singles, Tsamas lost a tough match in three sets to Pablo Perez-Esnaola from SMU, 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10-2). Tsamas forced a third set by taking the second set, 7-5, after trailing, 3-4, early on. In the tiebreaker, Tsamas could not overcome an early deficit and fell 10-2.

The Green and Blue welcome FAMU (0-3) to the FGCU Tennis Complex on Saturday at 1 p.m.
