Athens, Ga. – After a rainy morning canceled singles consolation play on Saturday, the FGCU women’s tennis team returned to the baseline on Sunday for its final day at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships.
After dropping matches in the opening round of the main singles draw, Johanna Sterkel (Schwetzingen, Germany/Carl-Theodor-Schule HS), Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) and Elizabeth Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) were scheduled to begin play in the consolation bracket on Saturday. When day two arrived, it was accompanied by hours of rain and a lack of space at the University of Georgia’s indoor tennis facility resulting in postponing consolation play until Sunday.
Originally, play in the consolation draw was supposed follow the traditional single elimination style until only one player remained, but Saturday’s inclement weather yielded another change as the tournament directors decided to have consolation play end on Sunday.
Picking up a win for the Green and Blue in her consolation match was Sterkel as she cruised to a quick 6-3, 6-3, victory over her Atlantic Sun opponent, Isabel Dennis of Mercer. Earning a walkover win was Sarah Means as her sister Elizabeth suffered a 6-2, 6-3, loss to Jordana Klein of Georgia Southern.
After a weekend off the Eagles will end their fall season as the head to Miami for the FIU Invitational Nov. 1-3.
