Gainesville – After four days of rigorous play at the Bedford Cup – the annual battle between Florida’s Division I programs – the FGCU women’s tennis team returns to The Nest with one of its members crowned a champion.

After an early exit from the main singles draw, Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) made a goal to redeem her first-round loss by dominating the singles backdraw – and that is exactly what she did.

“I’m happy that Sarah won the backdraw this weekend,” head coach Courtney Vernon said. “She showed discipline and courage throughout the tournament. I’m also very proud of Johanna and Bettina for making the doubles semifinals, what a great step for our program. I’m so thankful for our entire team and the support they showed each other this weekend.

Defeating her two previous opponents in a quick two sets, Means entered Sunday’s quarterfinal match ready to continue her momentum as she faced Florida’s Stefani Stojic. She knew a win wouldn’t come easy as Stojic beat Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS) 6-0, 6-2 in their quarterfinal consolation match one day earlier. Facing a top-notch opponent, Means proved that FGCU can hang with high-major programs as she took down the Gator 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the finals.

After a short break, Means returned to the baseline for her backdraw finals match, set to face Atlantic Sun foe Mariella Calderon of North Florida. Looking to take home the title, Means exuded confidence and she claimed another two-set victory to win the match and the backdraw 6-2, 6-3.

“I’m happy that I was able to pull it out today,” Means said. “I had a lot of support from my team, which I’m very thankful for. Overall, this weekend went well for us.”

The Green and Blue picked up a total eight singles and three doubles wins this weekend.
