FORT MYERS, Fla. – With the 2013 regular season in the books, the FGCU women’s tennis team (11-7, 4-4 A-Sun) will turn the page to postseason play. The .500 finish in league play helped the Green and Blue capture the No. 5 seed, placing them in an Atlantic Sun Championship quarterfinal matchup with No. 4 Stetson at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, April 19 in Johnson City, Tenn.

This will mark the second appearance in the A-Sun Championships for the Eagles with it coming in just their second year of postseason eligibility. During the 2011-12 season, FGCU took down No. 6 Jacksonville in the quarterfinal round, 4-2, before falling to ETSU in the semifinal round, 4-1.

By defeating Bethune-Cookman, 5-0, in the regular season finale on April 14, the Eagles collected their 11th win of the season which set a Division I program record and marked the first winning season since joining the Division I ranks during the 2007-08 season.

FGCU had a successful week off of the courts as three Eagles collected a total of four A-Sun conference honors with the regular season complete. Sophomore Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) was named to the All-Atlantic Sun second team in the No. 1 singles spot and the Academic All-Atlantic Sun Conference team, while freshmen Elizabeth Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) and Johanna Sterkel (Schwetzingen, Germany/Carl-Theodor-Schule HS) were both named to the All-Freshman team.

Stetson leads the all-time series with FGCU 4-1 through five meetings in the history of the programs. The two teams last met on April 13, 2012 at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center in DeLand, Fla. with the Hatters coming out with a 5-2 triumph on their home courts.

With a victory in the quarterfinal round of the A-Sun Championships over Stetson, FGCU will advance to the semifinal round to face top seed and host ETSU on Saturday, April 20.
