FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU (4-2) women’s tennis team looks to continue what has been a successful start to the 2013 dual match season when it hosts Ball State and Penn on Tuesday and Friday afternoon this week at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
FGCU will take on a Ball State team on Tuesday, March 5 at 2:00 p.m. that was busy over the first two months of the spring season. The Cardinals played a total of twelve matches over a five week span and went 7-5 in the contests. Ball State may have fatigue against them as they will be taking on FGCU less than 24 hours after having fishing facing James Madison in Orlando on Monday, March 4.
Freshman standouts Johanna Sterkel (Schwetzingen, Germany/Carl-Theodor-Schule HS) and Elizabeth Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) look to lead the charge for FGCU during the busy week. Each of the first year Eagles sport 5-1 records in singles matches this season. All of Sterkel’s five singles triumphs have come in two-set sweeps and four of Means’ five singles wins have been in straight sets with her fifth victory coming in comeback fashion against Iowa State (Feb. 18).
On Friday, March 8 at 2:00 p.m. FGCU will face off against a Penn squad that is 6-2 on the year and 2-0 in matches played in the state of Florida in 2013 which includes wins over James Madison and Stetson. The meeting between FGCU and Penn will conclude a three-match trip in Florida for the Quakers.
The Green and Blue will look to turn up their intensity from the start by seizing the doubles point in both matches, which is something they have only been able to do in two of their first six matches in the 2013 spring season.
The Ball State and Penn contests with serve as the second and third matches of a six-match homestand that is the longest of the 2013 season for the Eagles. Admission to both matches at the FGCU Tennis Complex is free.
