ORLANDO, Fla. – After having won its first two road matches of the 2013 dual match season, FGCU (3-2) was defeated by UCF 7-0 at the UCF Tennis Complex in Orlando on Thursday afternoon.

UCF (6-3) entered the day with an eight match win streak in dual match play on its home court with its only three losses of the 2013 dual match season having come at the racquets of ranked opponents.

“UCF came out very strong today and ready to play,” said FGCU head coach Jen Gabou. “We need to work on playing from the first ball and stepping in when balls are short. Today we definitely saw where we can improve.”

A 3-2 start to the 2013 spring season ties a program-best start for the Eagles since joining the Division I ranks in 2007, with the 2010-11 FGCU women’s tennis team also having started off the 2011 spring dual match season 3-2.

On the doubles courts, the FGCU duo of Elizabeth Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch, Fla.) and Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch, Fla.) were on the verge of winning their match as they led 7-3, but with UCF having won the first two doubles matches, the doubles point was unattainable for the Green and Blue and therefore the match was not completed.

Senior Morgan Bechtel (Toldeo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) and sophomore Sarah Means both battled in their respective singles matches as they seized the second set despite both having dropped the first. Bechtel took UCF’s Courtney Griffith to the wire as the contest entered a third set to settle the match, but Bechtel was unable to complete the comeback as she fell 10-6 in a third set tiebreaker.

FGCU will return home to the FGCU Tennis Complex for its next match to face St. John’s on Tuesday, Feb. 26 with the match set to get underway at 10:00 a.m. The dual match will be the first of a six-match homestand at the FGCU Tennis Complex for the Green and Blue that will run through Sunday, Mar. 17.
