FORT MYERS, Fla. – After having dropped the doubles point in the last four dual matches, the FGCU (6-3, 1-0 A-Sun) women’s tennis team seized the doubles point on its way to a 5-2 dual match victory over Lipscomb to open Atlantic Sun play at the FGCU Tennis Complex on Thursday afternoon.

“They did well today and I am happy we won our first conference match,” said head coach Jennifer Gabou. “I am seeing improvement bit-by-bit and I am looking forward to the next two matches.”

By starting off the conference season with a victory, FGCU has now started off its league play schedule with a win in each of the last two seasons.

The Green and Blue started off strong with two doubles victories to win the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead over the visiting Bison. Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) and Johanna Sterkel (Schwtzingen, Germany/Carl-Theodor-Schule HS) played in the second doubles spot for the Eagles and won 8-4, while Elizabeth Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) and Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) won their doubles match, 8-4, in the third spot for FGCU.

FGCU was relentless in its mission for a victory as the Eagles took the singles matches in the first, third, fifth and six spots in their lineup to secure the dual match victory by taking hold of a 5-0 advantage over Lipscomb.

Sarah Means, Johanna Sterkel, Elizabeth Means and Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS) were the four to win their singles matches, all in straight sets, to propel FGCU to a victory on its home court.

With an Eagle dual match victory already clinched, Lipscomb took the final two singles matches to pick up its first points of the match before falling 5-2 at the conclusion of the contest.

FGCU will retake its home court at the FGCU Tennis Complex on Saturday, March 16 at 10 a.m. against A-Sun newcomer Northern Kentucky as the Green and Blue will look to improve to 2-0 in league play. Admission to all matches at the FGCU Tennis Complex is free.

Following the match, results and a recap from the dual match action will be available at www.FGCUATHLETICS.com.
